March 9, 2010 Alameda County Food Drive

The Alameda County Community Food Bank has invited us to participate in their annual School Food Drive. We will be accepting donations for a two-week period beginning Wednesday, March 10. Sadly, children represent 50% of the Food Bank's emergency food recipients. Please look in your pantries or go shopping to aid the hungry families of Alameda County. Items most needed are: canned fruit and vegetables, canned meats and fish, peanut butter, pasta, beans, rice, canned soup (low-salt), low-sugar cereal and oatmeal, tomato sauce, and powdered milk. A barrel in which to place your donations will be located by the administrative front desk. Thank you.

February 11, 2010 COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Lazear elementary school is in need of student volunteers to help elementary school students with their homework. The school is located on 29th Ave. near Fruitvale. High school tutors have been coming on Wed. afternoon from 3:30-4:10 to help kids with their homework assignments. It’s also possible to tutor on Tues. and Thurs., but the time of the “academic” session of the afterschool program those days is 5:10-5:50. Tutors work with one or two students at a time, not always the same kids each week. They help out in the same classroom each week. It's preferred that the tutors are Juniors or Seniors in high school since they have to drive to get there, unless you have another way to get there. There are quite a few Spanish-speaking students at Lazear, so if you speak Spanish, your language skills will also be put to use! You’re welcome to call Beth Hurwich with questions: 654-9669, or email her at bhurwich@comcast.net.

February 9, 2010 President's Day Holidays

We will not be at school on Friday, February 12 and Monday, February 15 due to the President's Day holidays. If you would like your student to meet with your teacher, please contact the teacher directly by email to see if you can reach a mutual agreement. Otherwise, we will see you all on Tuesday.

Enjoy your holiday!

January 1, 2010 Volunteer Opportunities

Hi All,

Many of you have been asking about volunteering and community service opportunities for your students. As a friendly reminder, all graduating seniors need a minimum of 15 community service hours per year for a total of 60 hours in order to graduate!

We recently discovered this FANTASTIC website that is constantly updating volunteer jobs:

This particular page is for teens.
